Cover Design- The cover is plain, with who appears to be Claire on it. She appears to look differently from how she has looked on previous covers. The white background with the splash of blue colors is a nice change. It makes Claire stand out more. 4 STARS Concept- I have said many times that the concept of these books has to change in order for them to be interesting for the reader to continue the series. That being said this book had a great concept! It took the series, which was dying and gave it new life. We’ve gone from the vampires being the big bad in town to them suddenly being scared themselves and needing to run away from what no one knows. The twist within the book that affects a main character is heartbreaking to the point where you want to throw the book across the room and say no this cannot be! But the more that you read it the more you want to know what happens. Seeing this new aspect in the book series made the books more interesting and suddenly I wanted to know what happened. 5 STARS Plot/Subplot- The plot in this book is the four friends, the main characters, and the affection that they feel for each other. They are more family than friends at this point. They fight for each other not just themselves. When one of them is lost it is heartbreaking. I had to know what happened next! The subplot changes drastically in this book. It is not just that the vampires are running things and the humans are pissed off and want to do something. The centers around what happens when the predator find someone else above them in the food chain and the fear that comes from that. 4 STARS Character Development- In this book, the reader sees a different side to not just the main characters, but Amelie as well. We get a chance to go inside their heads not in the first person, but in the way that you see how they react to everything around them. Getting a chance to see inside Amelie’s head is a good twist. It gives the reader a chance to understand her better. I found myself seeing her as a good guy even though she isn’t exactly. Amelie wants to be a ruler with a hard hand, but there is a part of her that feels compassion. Entertainment Level- I stayed up reading many nights with this one. I had to know what happened, especially after the loss of one of them. The way that Caine has written the reaction by all those involved to the death of this person was poignant and heart breaking. I did feel like screaming when a new group of annoying humans with matching tattoos of a dagger decided to once more try to change the status quo in town. It is like beating your head against a wall. You know it is only going to end one way, with a headache. 5 STARS Overall I give this book 4 ½ STARS
